Natalie: Today on the show I'm speaking with Betty Iams. Now 18 years ago she was diagnosed with MS, and after 18 years she now has no symptoms and she's helping other people create the same optimal health in their life as well. So stay tuned.
Hi I'm Natalie Ledwell and this is The Inspiration Show. And today my special guest is Betty Iams. How are you Betty?
Betty: I'm wonderful thank you.
Natalie: Now the reason I have you here is, we're actually discussing some success you've been having with Mind Movies but we really wanted to touch on a lot of the healing information that you're putting up on the internet at the moment at some specific things that you've gone through personally. So why don't we start a little bit with you story.
Betty: Oh alright, 18 years ago I was diagnosed with, excuse me, Primary progressive multiple scoliosis which is generally considered to be incurable, and untreatable and usually puts you on a wheelchair in a notably short period of time, and I am a pretty stubborn lady, and I just refused to accept that. And I was fortunately, in one respect, I have a neurologist who told me that, I was strictly on my own, he said try everything, just... and if its something that works for you that's wonderful... so that's what I did and I had, I came from a metaphysical background and what simply means beyond physical, beyond the five senses, and also taking responsibility for all that you created everything in your life and realizing that, if that really was true, which I believed, then I should be able to un-create this thing that had appeared in my body. And I began to study all the metaphysical masters like, Wayne Dior, Jack Proptu, Bruce Lenon and Bryan Wise, and then the masters of the so-called New Age Movement like Bob Protu and Joe Vitale, and some of those people and I studied everything that they did. And 15 years ago I developed a website called; Betty's House, Life after MS. And I invited the MS community to come along with me on my journey and I didn't know where it was going to lead but I was determined and I shared with my subscribers tips and insights, now all through these years my entire journey. It took me about a year and a half to stop the progression, and a period of another 5 or 6 years, I gradually overcame the effect, the neurological damage, I had sustained during the period when it was active. And today doctor tells me that they can't even find a sign that I had it.
Betty: Which is pretty wonderful, just this week, I was walking in my neighborhood, I go for a daily walk and outside I heard someone say BETTY, BETTY! I turned around and it was a lady in car, that I had not seen in several years but I have met when first moved here 10 years ago. And she said to me; "where is your cane?" and I, it floored me because it been so long since I used a cane, I've forgotten about it. And so, that just happened this week.
Natalie: Now I know that when you were first diagnosed with MS, it was particularly scary for you because your mother, you've nursed your mother through that whole process.
Betty: Yes I had, I was only 17 years old when my mother was first diagnosed and at the time of my diagnosis, my mother had been a total invalid in a nursing home for many years and I was her only contact with the world, so it's really an understatement to say I was initially terrified. I really, really was terrified.
Natalie: And I know that it was 18 years ago that you were first diagnosed and you now have no symptoms, and I know that you recently celebrated a birthday.
Betty: I did, I can't believe that its number 76, don't tell anybody except yourself.
Natalie: we'll just keep it between the 2 of us.
Betty: Okay good.
Natalie: So, tell me about some of the people that you know... do you get to interact with a lot of people that come to your website? Have you heard of other people having success with what you're teaching?
Betty: Oh my yes, all over the world. I have several thousand subscribers, and many of them have been with me from the beginning and many of them have had the same success I've had. The biggest challenge is getting them to realize, this is not something you start and stop, it's a true to life change, you know, I believe in such... I call them Healing Tools, as daily exercise, physical exercise is so important. Our body was designed to move first of all, you know. What healing really is, healing is synonymous with change, sometimes what we need to heal is a toxic relationship or a bad job, or you know, it's not just necessarily physical, but healing. And if were going to change those things, we have to change the way we live, change the way we think, and one of the tools that have been very important for me are affirmations. And that's why I got so excited when I found Mind Movies because Mind Movies were an exciting, energetic interactive kind of affirmations like animated vision boards, and it's a whole lot easier to get excited about Mind Movie with motivating music behind it and inspiring photos along with your affirmation than just sitting and reading affirmations or looking at a vision board. And also, I'm a great, great fan of Mind Movies. I've made many, many, and many of them myself. And I made them about everything, and if I wanted to do something new, I make a Mind Movie about it and I watched it every morning, and then I watch it again at the end of the day, and in the morning I combine it with my morning meditation, which is another important healing tool for me. And I decided to write a second book about my healing process and even the name came out of my meditation and working with my Mind Movies and I call it; Self-Healing Made Easy. And what I tried to do is take the message of those masters that I mentioned earlier and kind of reduce some to the lowest common denominator or should I say the easiest, easiest way to apply them and that's what I wrote about. And I made a Mind Movie about that process and that book actually went live on the amazon and the candle store about 6 or 8 weeks ago and I re-watched that old Mind Movie that I made about that, and I got so excited that I wrote you a note because everything that I put in that Mind Movie, I had accomplished with that little book. And it's doing very well, so I'm really, really excited about that and I just couldn't wait to share it with you.
Natalie: Yeah I know and thank you, and that's what we're talking today. You know something has just occurred to me, you know you're talking about the habits that you have on a daily basis you maintain optimal health. Now what I used to do with Passion Peeps section on this show, I realized that when I asked people what they did on a daily basis for success, they kind of build down to 5 things which is exercise, focusing on what it is you wanted to achieve by watching Mind Movie or Affirmations whatever, you know education, connection to source which is either meditating or you know just having quite -time and we had education, oh and gratitude. So you just basically mentioned all those things and you used that for optimal health. So it seems that if you got those daily habits happening for you, it will spill up for every area in your life.
Betty: That's true, it really does and another important aspect is just basic simple nutrition, because we so often forget that. It's really, really important, I'm very conscious of everything I put in my mouth, but it is important what we put in our head too.
Betty: It is important what we read, it is important what we say because people would say to me all the time I do phone consultations a lot with people from all over the world and they say; "I can't visualize." And I said, "You can't visualize? You know what visualization is just your imagination. When we were children we all use it all the time." And seldom say I can't do that, we set it aside and we, we don't stop to consider why we're saying that, and because remember the healing is synonymous with change, if things in your life are going to change, then you've got to change some things in your life. It's really a very simple concept. But it doesn't necessarily mean it's easy to apply, but it's always easy once we tell ourselves it always easy, and we really believe it.
Natalie: Yeah, exactly.
Betty: You must believe those affirmations, you can say, you know I'm happy, I'm healthy, at peace within which is one of my fair favorites, but if you don't believe it, doesn't mean anything. You must believe those affirmations.
Natalie: Yes, exactly. And so the other thing I think that really helps people to believe that they can actually do something is what I call; Social Proof. So do you have success stories and other people on your website that people can read about?
Betty: Yes, for the last 15 years I've had a newsletter called Journey To Wellness it's published every month and there's a subscription form on my Betty's House website where one can subscribe to that and receive that, and I share interaction with the subscribers every month and include the success stories, I even have a couple of physicians who, I remember one lady in Germany who had have to stop her medical practice, because of MS and she found me on the internet and started the program, and in a year, she was back practicing medicine.
Betty: And every January she writes me a long letter and tells me about her experience and brings me up today, and those things are wonderful.
Natalie: Yeah and that you know and the thing that I think is really exciting about what you do is well is that, even though specifically you're talking about MS, it really, or anyone who has health problem or any health challenge at all, they can use this information to be able to create optimal health for themselves as well.
Betty: That's right, what I teach has nothing to do with MS it just happens to be based on my experience but it really just, it applies to everybody and everything, anything you want to change, it's something you want to heal.
Betty: Just always think of healing being synonymous with change.
